What do crime victims’ hearts look like? How about the hearts of the family and friends of the victims? We exposed those broken, scarred and carved hearts on the site. A stark formal contrast to the peaceful and poignant surroundings, these raw and rough scallops become surprisingly inviting as they round their edges and dress themselves in warm wood. The main path that cuts across the monument is the most direct and ritual passageway that will take a visitor to the core of the monument ‒ gently lit translucent acrylic walls with the inscription of the victims’ names. In most cases, however, visitors will approach the monument from all over, and visually sew these broken hearts by walking on, in and through them, as they remember and pray for the victims. The interaction here is mutual: in return for being mended, these broken hearts offer a fun playground for kids, as well as lake-view seating area under the trees.
